Starting a bourbon collection is most rewarding when it follows taste and not market value. Begin from a category then explore around it. Storage is often overlooked – store upright, in stable conditions and at no heat cycling. Documentation preserves value.

Allocated releases describes releases supplied in restricted quantities to retailers. Collector interest consistently exceeds what is bottled, and that produces the resale premium. Bottles such as Pappy Van Winkle are at the peak of the category. Provenance is important in the secondary market.

Sourcing rare whiskey online requires more care than buying an everyday bottle. Check seller provenance, above all on high-value allocated releases. The fill level plus seal condition tell you about how the bottle was kept. Reputable merchants document the specific bottle you receive and not a generic photograph.

American whiskey divides across clear classifications. Bourbon requires made from at least 51 percent corn and matured in new charred oak barrels. Rye is built on at least 51 percent rye, producing a sharper character. The Tennessee style includes maple charcoal mellowing prior B&W Reserve to ageing.
